Happy "What to Wear Wednesday"! Did you know that Ingenuity`s annual Bal is a nod to Cleveland’s exclusive arts club, the Kokoon Klub, that dominated modernist arts in the city from the 1910s until the 1940s. The Kokoon Klub’s annual “Bal Masque” challenged artistic norms with the most unconventional parties around. Raucous and bawdy, the events were "wild (and wildly creative) celebrations of bohemianism that featured one-of-a-kind costumes, exotic dances, provocative art, periodic nudity, chaotic processions, giant props and over-the-top decorations."

To us, the Ingenuity Bal: Rust Belt Renaissance shares many themes with the Venetian Carnivale, a long-standing celebration of tradition and creativity! The Carnivale is still celebrated annually but dates back all the year to year 1162. This celebration became an annual tradition leading up to Lent, much as the annual Ingenuity Bal marks the official commencement of Ingenuity`s season leading up to IngenuityFest. The Venetian Carnivale is more than just a costumed celebration, but is a reflection of Italy’s cultural identity and artistic spirit. The Ingenuity Bal: Rust Belt Renaissance will draw on these themes, reflecting Cleveland`s Rust Belt identity and creative industries.
